CPHI Barcelona 2025: Meet Our Team
February 28, 2025 - Johnson Matthey Catalysis & Chiral Technologies is pleased to announce our participation in CPHI Barcelona 2025, the premier pharmaceutical ingredients and technology exhibition. Join us at Booth 4B50 from March 18-20, 2025, for live demonstrations, technical presentations, and discussions with our catalysis experts.
Exhibition Highlights
CPHI Barcelona provides an exceptional platform for engaging with pharmaceutical industry leaders, exploring emerging technologies, and advancing collaborative partnerships. Our presence reflects our commitment to supporting pharmaceutical innovation through advanced catalytic solutions.
This year’s booth features several exciting elements designed to showcase our latest capabilities and facilitate meaningful technical discussions. We have dedicated demonstration areas, consultation spaces for private discussions, and interactive displays highlighting our comprehensive catalyst portfolio.
Live Biocatalyst Screening Demonstrations
A centerpiece of our booth will be live demonstrations of our automated biocatalyst screening platform. This advanced system enables rapid evaluation of enzyme variants against customer substrates, dramatically accelerating biocatalyst selection for pharmaceutical process development.
The platform integrates robotic liquid handling, high-throughput analytics, and real-time data visualization. Visitors can observe the complete workflow from substrate preparation through analytical characterization of reaction products. Our technical specialists will explain how this technology reduces biocatalyst screening timelines from weeks to days while simultaneously improving data quality and reproducibility.
During scheduled demonstration sessions, we will showcase screening of ketoreductase enzymes for chiral alcohol synthesis. This represents one of the most commercially important biocatalytic transformations in pharmaceutical manufacturing. The demonstration illustrates how our enzyme library and screening automation work together to identify optimal biocatalysts for specific substrates.
Technical Presentations Schedule
Our booth will host a series of technical presentations throughout the three-day exhibition. These presentations provide deeper insights into specific catalysis topics and application areas. Seating is limited, and we encourage advance registration through our website.

New Product Previews
CPHI Barcelona provides an exclusive opportunity to preview products scheduled for official launch later in 2025. Visitors to our booth will see advance demonstrations of three significant product developments currently in final validation stages.
Our next-generation palladium scavenger technology achieves unprecedented removal efficiency, reducing residual palladium levels below one part per million in pharmaceutical intermediates. This capability is increasingly critical as regulatory requirements for elemental impurities become more stringent. The new scavenger formulations work effectively across diverse solvent systems and accommodate high process throughput.
We will also preview an expanded family of immobilized biocatalysts designed for continuous-flow processing. Traditional biocatalysis often requires batch reactors with enzyme recovery and recycling steps. Our immobilized enzyme formulations enable continuous-flow operation with extended catalyst lifetimes, transforming biocatalysis economics for commercial-scale pharmaceutical production.
The third preview focuses on our novel iridium complexes for C-H activation chemistry. These catalysts enable selective functionalization of previously inaccessible C-H bonds, opening new synthetic routes to complex pharmaceutical structures. Early customer trials have demonstrated remarkable regioselectivity and functional group tolerance.
Expert Consultations
Understanding that every pharmaceutical synthesis challenge is unique, we offer private consultation sessions with our technical experts. These thirty-minute sessions provide focused discussion of your specific catalysis needs, whether you are addressing a current process bottleneck or exploring new synthetic strategies.
Our experts bring deep knowledge across heterogeneous catalysis, homogeneous catalysis, chiral technologies, and biocatalysis. During consultation sessions, you can discuss substrate-specific catalyst selection, reaction optimization strategies, scale-up considerations, and regulatory compliance issues related to catalyst residues.
Consultation sessions are available by appointment throughout the exhibition. Due to high demand, we recommend booking your preferred time slot in advance through our online scheduling system. Walk-in consultations are accommodated subject to availability.
Interactive Catalyst Selection Tool
Our booth features an interactive digital tool that guides users through catalyst selection decisions based on substrate structure and desired transformation. This educational resource demonstrates the decision-making process our technical team employs when addressing customer inquiries.
Users input substrate structural features, functional groups, and reaction objectives. The tool then suggests appropriate catalyst classes and provides comparative information on expected performance characteristics. While not a replacement for expert consultation on complex problems, the tool offers valuable educational insights into catalyst selection logic.
The interactive tool covers major reaction classes including hydrogenation, oxidation, cross-coupling, C-C bond formation, and asymmetric synthesis. Each recommendation includes links to relevant technical literature, case studies, and product information.
Sustainable Chemistry Initiative Showcase
Sustainability represents a core focus area for our organization and the pharmaceutical industry broadly. Our booth includes a dedicated section highlighting our sustainable chemistry initiatives and their impact on reducing environmental footprint of pharmaceutical manufacturing.
We will present data on precious metal consumption reduction achieved through improved catalyst efficiency. Recent catalyst innovations enable substrate-to-catalyst ratios ten times higher than previous generations, directly reducing precious metal requirements and associated environmental extraction impacts.
Our biocatalyst portfolio exemplifies green chemistry principles through ambient temperature operation, aqueous reaction media, and high selectivity that eliminates waste from unwanted byproducts. Case studies demonstrate quantitative environmental benefits measured through green chemistry metrics including E-factor, atom economy, and process mass intensity.
The showcase also addresses catalyst recycling and precious metal recovery programs. We operate comprehensive recycling services that recover palladium, platinum, rhodium, and ruthenium from spent catalysts, closing the loop on precious metal lifecycles and reducing demand for virgin metal production.
Networking Opportunities
Beyond formal presentations and demonstrations, CPHI Barcelona offers exceptional networking opportunities. Our team members are available throughout the exhibition for informal discussions, and we encourage visitors to spend time at our booth exploring our capabilities and building relationships.
We host a daily reception at our booth from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM where visitors can enjoy refreshments while engaging in relaxed conversations with our technical and commercial teams. These receptions have historically generated valuable connections and collaborative opportunities.
